The Collegian
About
The Collegian is the independent, student-run newspaper of South Dakota State University. It will educate, inform and entertain everyone on campus—from faculty, to staff, to the entire student body.
The Collegian will be trustworthy. It will not bend to external pressure or internal laziness. Our writing will be honest, balanced and as accurate as possible. We will show both sides of every issue without prejudice. Our opinion will be reserved for the opinion/editorial pages. Our belief in SDSU will be shown by the strength, fairness and honesty of our criticism.
The Collegian will be excellent. It will represent the best work of SDSU student journalists. Staff members are chosen based on talent and ability, and coached to excel. Staff members will work closely with the adviser and outside professionals to produce the best newspaper possible. We will enter and win competitions.
The Collegian will be engaged. As part of the community, the newspaper will sponsor worthwhile events. Newspaper members will be encouraged to actively participate in the campus and community life, in large ways and small.
The Collegian will be the voice of students. Our writing will reflect the concerns and conversations of students. From story choices to the openness of our opinion/editorial pages, student voices will be the heart and soul of the newspaper.
The Collegian will be a voice for students. In the best newspaper tradition, we will be an advocate for our readers. A journalist is a best friend to the oppressed and the oppressor's greatest foe. Therefore, we will work tirelessly to speak for those who have no voice. As a student newspaper, we will avoid conflicts of interest and work to keep the administration and student politicians honest.
